Dolphins are also very amazing animals. Did you know that if you lay down in water and put the ball of your foot to their nose they will push you around. The dolphin is part of the toothed whales such as the orcas and pilot whales. The dolphin is a mammal and breathes through a blow hole in the top of their head. They can vary in colors but almost all the time they are gray with a darker. The dolphins diet varies including fish, squid and crustaceans.
The amazonian river dolphin is the smallest dolphin at five feet in length. It weighs about 100 lbs. The largest dolphin species is the orca. Male orcas grow to about 18 feet in length and weigh about 19,000 pounds! Most dolphins have an high average life span. The average life span of a dolphin is about 100 years. But some dolphins have lived over that (that is amazing.)
Most species live in tropical and temperate oceans throughout the world. Five species live in rivers. Dophins are known for their agility and playful behavior. That behavior makes them a favorite for wildlife watchers. The birth rate is usually one calf; twins are rare.As soon as the calf is born, the mother must quickly take it to the surface so it can take its first breath. The calf will nurse from 11 months to 2 years, and after it is done nursing it will still stay with its mother until it is between 3 and 8 years old.
